A dilema

This morning's text was Isaiah 55: 1-7 which begins thus....

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

As I sat in my study before the servcie a gentleman stumbles into my roon, sits down and asks that I phone him a taxi. I ask where he wants to get to and its just a few streets away so I call my other half who leaves preparing communion to drive him there. The guy then asks to be taken to a cash point and asks that money is taken out on his behalf by giving his card and pin!(he obviously trusts Christians)

Then comes the crunch point - please would he go and buy 3 bottles of sherry? Two attempts to say there was none in the shop fail when he driects my husband to another shop next door which he knows sells it! The sherry is duely bought and the man taken home - a home that is not a nice place to be in. He admits to being an alcholic on the drive home - his parents died and he can't cope. He is caring as he asks that a covering be put on the car seat as he is incontinent and offers to pay for the petrol. He is told thank you but no thank you, this was done because we are Christians and care for him.

Should the alcohol have been bought? What should I do now? Visit, call social services......

The Isaiah passage talks about people in need and the generosity of God to provide for us in that need, giving us life in all its fulness....today the rubber hit the road in this little church
